Look What I Made

Finally, I finished the quilt I made as a wedding gift for my brother and sister-in-law. According to the rules of etiquette, one officially has a year to give newlyweds a wedding present. Their wedding fell just about a month after Ironman Lake Placid. I figured once I got over that hurdle, I would have plenty of time for the quilt. Heck, I thought I would have time to get my MBA, write a novel or two, adopt a puppy, and organize my spare room aka) the crazy room. How wrong I was. The idle minutes slipped into hours, days, and weeks of dark non-productivity. Maybe I’m being dramatic… I do remember peering out from under my blanket of nothingness to take day trips to Block Island and Nantucket, I enjoyed words speaking words like “I’m totally free for brunch Sunday morning” and “Tuesday night is pretty free if you want to grab a bite.” It wasn’t all bad. But I was not able to harness my powers of time management to get this quilt out on time, try as I might. Before I knew it, the wedding date had long since past and the happy couple was expecting. I shifted my mental deadline to before the baby is born (which would still be well within my official one-year limit). Actually according to my new guidelines, I am way ahead of schedule…. So here it is. I could tell you it was exactly how I meant it to be, that the elliptical edges were part of the whole vision, that I didn’t consider forgetting the whole thing and giving them a gift certificate to Ruth’s Chris instead, and that I didn’t run out of the binding fabric mid-project, have to rip it out stich by stitch, and start over with a new fabric, but I would be lying. Probably 1% of my projects come out how I’d planned, but that’s fine with me. God laughs at those who make plans. When everything I planned gets screwed up I figure if that saying is true, perhaps there is a god after all.

I know how you feel; when I finish something big and time consuming, I always think I’ll have all the time in the world for something else. I’m not sure what the algorithm entails – if you just take longer to do other things or if you lack the energy you once had to start something new – but it never turns out how you think. The the point is: you completed the beautiful quilt and you are moving to CO! We can’t wait to see you. Loved the un-Bday post too! 🙂

I will leave it to the biostatistician to work on the algorithm:) My pea brain theory is: more to do = do everything more efficiently
