I entered the Mash Stories flash fiction competition on a whim, and they selected my story, “A Gorgeous Day to Fly” for the shortlist! This means I get to use the fancy sounding word “shortlist” with reference to my own writing. It also means my story will be professionally narrated, possibly even by someone with a British accent, for the Mash Stories podcast. Being on the shortlist means my story is a contender for overall contest winner. The winner receives $100 and a free 30 minute coaching session.

The rules of the contest were that you had to use three words: blow-dryer, cockpit, and honesty, and that the story not exceed 500 words. I scribbled out a story quickly, as soon as I heard about the contest. Two months later, about 18 hours before the deadline, I fretted over it for probably way too long, making a change here and a change there for probably way too long.
