Kol Nidre is the evening service the night  before Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), which is the holiest day of the year for Jewish people. Jewish Renewal is one of several denominations of Judaism. In my limited experience it is, by far, the most New Age-y. I attended my first Jewish Renewal Service for Kol Nidre. I went by myself, which was another first for me.

1. I’m so glad I wore white. There are like, three people not wearing white.
   
2. Why did I come here alone?
3. If I had known this was going to start 15 minutes late, I wouldn’t have rushed out and left Dan to put both kids to bed and clean the baby’s poop out of the bathtub.
4. I wish Dan were here.
5. Dan would so not be into this.
6. He might be more into this than putting both kids to bed, and doing the pile of dishes left in the sink.
7. I’m supposed to wear a tallit?
8. I’ll do it if everyone else does.
9. I am not sure I remember how to put one of these things on.

14. Yes, she did.

17. I forgot how good it feels to sing along with a huge group of people.
18. People are into this.

20. I wish my kids were here.
21. Not really. It is so past their bedtime.
22. They will be here someday, and probably hating me, like that sullen 12 year-old girl sitting next to me probably hates her mother
23. No, they must stay little forever.
24. But they won’t.

26. This Shema is off the chain.
27. Do people still say off the chain?
28. I am going to pass this onto my kids.
29. My parents, my grandparents, my great grandparents, and everyone who came before them passed this onto me.
30. I am so glad I came.
31. The tub should be clean by the time I get home.
